**All handouts for all courses are available to students via Google Classroom sites for each course or via sharing through Google Drive.

English II

Students in English II will review some of the information they learned in English I and learn new information in preparation for English their junior year. They will receive further instruction in grammar, within the context of writing. The use of phrases and modifiers, as well as agreement, usage and mechanics will be a part of this focus. Students will read and respond to a variety of literature, including short stories, nonfiction selections, drama, novels, and poetry. Students will build their writing and thinking skills through different types of writing, including various styles of essays (narrative, expository, descriptive, and argumentative), online discussions, and poetry.

Supernatural Lit.

Students in Supernatural Literature will study supernatural/horror and suspenseful fiction from an analytical point of view. The works from this course will be both historical (e.g., Shirley Jackson) and contemporary (e.g., Richard Matheson, Clive Barker, and Stephen King). This course will contain suspenseful works that may cause anxiety for the reader. Students will be expected to write analytically about the works read in this course, as well as connecting them to real life.

Science Fiction Lit.

In Science Fiction Literature, students will learn about common elements of science fiction. Short stories and novels read in this course will introduce the students to science fiction, past and present, from the Industrial Revolution to today. Students will also study different forms of utopian and dystopian societies as represented in SF literature. Analysis of the works read, as well as connecting these works to real life, will comprise the bulk of student writing in this course.

Film as Literature

Film as Literature will involve students in a study of film and the basic language of film. Our world has become increasingly visual. Students need to develop an understanding of how to navigate this changing landscape, and this course provides them with that. Multiple genres and time periods will be studied, and students will gain a basic understanding of film, as well as a vocabulary for watching, analyzing, and writing about film.
